When we started Discount Pet Supplies 16 years ago we were very disappointed that most pet owners simply bought their pet food along with the weekly shop at the supermarket and we made it our mission to show you why it is not recommended. Sadly the vast majority still do but we are delighted to say that a growing number of people are now questioning just what goes in to supermarket bought convenince foods for pets. And more importantly, why does it cost so much?
Research shows that most shoppers rate convenience higher than quality or price! Amazing but true.

Virtually all commercial brand dog and cat food contains very little nutritional goodness. The biggest brand names are the worst offenders and charge the most! The next time you have an opportunity, look at the list of ingredients on the most popular brands. By law they must be listed on the product in order of highest quantity first. Chances are if you read the ingredients you would not buy the product. Most contain cheap cereals such as wheat which many animals are allergic to!! And virtually all contain meat and animal derivatives as the meat source. (Please phone us to explain what meat and animal derivatives means. It is a bit too graphic for our website!)

So we set out to see if it was possible to feed your beloved pets something slightly better and we are delighted to say that now you can give your pet the very, very best and at a fraction of the cost from the supermarket. Lots of conscientious pet food manufacturers have cottoned on to the interest in this market and it is growing every day. Products made from natural, wholesome ingredients, hypoallergenic recipes which mean your pet will not have any reaction to the food that it eats, organic food, holistic food, GM free food, cereal free food, gluten free food, the list goes on!! Special food for puppies/kittens, for overweight pets, diabetic pets, elderly pets, small dogs, medium dogs, large dogs, giant dogs!!! Special foods for tooth care, skin care. long haired, short haired, sensitive stomach, neutered, anal glands, and all manner of medical problems.

When you call in to our shop or phone you will speak to a person who has an understanding of your pets dietry needs. A person who has been trained in the requirements of different breeds of dogs and cats and small animals. A person who knows that young and old animals have very different needs when it comes to food. A person who will quickly find out what your pet needs and supply it to you there and then or have it efficiently delivered to your door. Very often that day!

Buying your pet food in the supermarket may seem to be convenient but it is certainly not best for your pet. And you could be paying up to six times more than you need to. Complete Dog and Cat foods .

Complete animal foods provide your pet with everything that they require for a happy healthy life and are nutritionally balanced for the life style and life stage of your pet They even come in different size kibble (biscuit) to suit your dogs chewing ability. They are much easier to deal with as there is no smell and can sit in your pets bowl all day. They are also packed in sizes suitable for the size of your animal. The bigger the bag you buy, the better the value. A further bonus of complete pet food is the amount of poo you have to deal with! 87% of wet food comes through your animal! With complete food it can be as little as 11%.

Throughout your pets life many trips to the vet with upset tummies, sickness, itching, scratching, bad breath, skin, coat, anal gland and wind problems could all be prevented or avoided if you were to simply feed better quality food.

At the time of publication we have 150 different complete dog foods and 70 different complete cat foods in stock ready for collection or delivery. We stock all the major brands, Burns, James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange, Eukanuba, Hills, Iams, Wafcol, Beta, Chappie, Supa, and our own exclusive brand, Macks Mix . We can usually source other brands very quickly if you have a specific product requirement.

A lot of pet owners insist that their animals are not keen on complete food, but when asked most say that they only tried one or two. We have a complete food that your pet will love and once we have asked you a few questions we will be able to point you in the right direction. We keep special completes for young pups and kittens, overweight pets, seniors, fussy animals and for pets with specific dietry requirements or allergies. We even sell vegetarian foods. Many complete foods are hypo-allergenic and use only organic and GM free ingredients.

All this choice and high quality might make you think that these foods are expensive. Nothing could be further from the truth. An adult cat being fed on the most expensive complete food costs 26p per day, based on Hills adult 5Kg bag. An adult Labrador eating James Wellbeloved 15kg sack would cost £1.22p per day to feed! The same dog would only cost 44p per day based on Macks Mix no frills working dog 15kg.

Complete foods are available in basic, premium and super-premium. We stock them all. Obviously we would always recommend that you use the best. All the top notch foods are made from the best of ingredients and do not use wheat or wheat gluten (which is a major cause of allergies in dogs) or red meat (which is the major cause of itchy dogs) If you have a pet that suffers from an upset tummy a lot then you should use complete foods that do not contain meat and animal derivatives (found in many commercially produced tin and pouch food).
